InterVarsity Press and the Transforming Center® have partnered to re-release expanded editions of Invitation to a Journey and The Deeper Journey, two foundational spiritual formation titles by the late Dr. M. Robert Mulholland Jr.

M Robert Mulholland Jr

Mulholland has guided tens of thousands of readers into spiritual formation practices for more than twenty years through his writing and teaching. Based on the vision of Transforming Resources®, these books are designed to provide step-by-step guidance for engaging the practices that foster greater intimacy with God and deeper levels of spiritual transformation.

Before Mulholland passed away in December 2015, he discussed the legacy of his writing with Ruth Haley Barton, a longtime friend and the founder of the Transforming Center. She said, "During that last retreat, Bob and I formalized an arrangement that will enable the Transforming Center to steward some of Bob's writings and teachings and bring it to a wider audience—a trust I take very seriously." Now Mulholland's landmark books are being made available to a new generation of leaders and pastors.

"The ongoing partnership with the Transforming Center is a wonderful new opportunity for InterVarsity Press to collaborate with Ruth Barton and her team. We are pleased to share a mutual commitment to raising awareness of Robert Mulholland's writing with them," said Cindy Bunch, IVP's associate publisher, editorial.

Invitation to a Journey

Invitation to a Journey: A Road Map for Spiritual Formation was first published in 1993. Barton expanded the book by adding a new foreword, discussion questions, and sharing opportunities. The spiritual practices included in this new edition are intended to be a means of God's grace, concrete ways of opening to God's transforming work in your life in very personal ways.

"I have shared Bob's work wherever I go," Barton said. "When I need to choose one book to provide the biblical and theological underpinnings for those seeking a deeper commitment to spiritual transformation, it is Invitation to a Journey.  When someone asks me who my teachers and mentors have been, Bob is the one I talk about the most."

The Deeper Journey

The Deeper Journey: The Spirituality of Discovering Your True Self, published in 2006, unpacks the false selves you may be tempted to hide behind, reckons with unhealthy ways of rooting your sense of being in things other than God, and helps you discover the true self that comes from intimacy with God. The new edition includes a study guide for individual reflection or group discussion.

IVP and the Transforming Center are also offering a new DVD called Spiritual Transformation for the Sake of Others that features a discussion between Barton and Mulholland about their own journeys of transformation in Christ. Intended for leadership, congregational, and small group gatherings, each segment is followed by questions for reflection and discussion.
