Preaching magazine named recent InterVarsity Press title The Question of Canon: Challenging the Status Quo in the New Testament Debate as one of the ten best books of the year on its list of the 2013 Preaching Survey of the Year's Best Books for Preachers. Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, compiled the exclusive list of volumes fit for any preacher's bookshelf.

"Those who take the Bible seriously must take the question of the canon seriously," wrote Mohler in the March/April issue of the magazine. "This volume represents the kind of work [Kruger's] faculty should aspire to emulate. He takes the serious questions related to the canon head-on and helps the reader to work through these issues in order to gain a greater appreciation for and confidence in the canon as the correct shape of God's written Word."

Rather than looking at questions like when the canon was developed and how it progressed, The Question of Canon examines why Christians have a canon at all, which has proven very relevant for preachers, scholars and professors.

"Michael Kruger's The Question of Canon is a penetrating exploration of five critical issues in the contemporary debate over the New Testament canon," said Dan Reid, senior acquisitions editor for IVP Academic. "For preachers and other students of the New Testament who want to understand the intrinsic forces that first shaped the canon, it's a terrific place to begin."

Other books featured alongside Kruger's volume include Reading for Preachers by Cornelius Plantinga Jr., Pilgrim Theology by Michael Horton and Galatians in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament Series, by Douglas J. Moo.

"Each of these ten books deserves a space on the preacher's bookshelf," wrote Mohler. "Every one of these books will make a worthy contribution to the preacher's ministry, not only in the year ahead, but far into the future. The reason for this is quite simple: the conversation we begin with a book is not completed when the reading of the book is finished and the book is placed again on the shelf—that conversation continues."
