Wisdom of the Early Church Fathers for Modern Readers
The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (ACCS) lets you explore the writings of early church fathers for yourself. Organized by the books of the Bible and using the Revised Standard Version translation, each of the twenty-nine volumes brings the voices of the early church to life as they engage with Scripture.
Scholars have carefully selected and presented material from a wide range of writings—including much that is available only in the ancient languages—providing readers with valuable insights into Scripture. The result is a postcritical revival of the early commentary tradition known as the glossa ordinaria, a text artfully elaborated with ancient and authoritative reflections and insights.
The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
As an ecumenical project, the ACCS bridges the gap between modern Christian traditions and their ancient roots, fostering communication and understanding. Pastoral theologians from across the centuries offer their theological, spiritual, and pastoral insights, making this commentary a valuable resource for all Christians, especially those who teach the Bible.
"The Ancient Christian Commentary Series is a marvelous tool for the recovery of biblical wisdom in today's church. Not just another scholarly project, the ACCS is a major source for the renewal of preaching, theology, and Christian devotion."
—Timothy George, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University
"As a pastor, how does one cultivate a knowledge of the history of interpretation? That's where IVP's Reformation Commentary on Scripture and its forerunner, the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, come in. They do an excellent job in helping pastors become more aware of the history of exegesis for the benefit of their congregations. Every pastor should have access to a set of each."
—Carl R. Trueman, Paul Woolley Chair of Church History, professor of church history, Westminster Theological Seminary
"Contemporary pastors do not stand alone. We are not the first generation of preachers to wrestle with the challenges of communicating the gospel. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture puts us in conversation with our colleagues from the past, that great cloud of witnesses who preceded us in this vocation. This commentary enables us to receive their deep spiritual insights, their encouragement, and guidance for present-day interpretation and preaching of the Word. What a wonderful addition to any pastor's library!"
—William H. Willimon, dean of the chapel and professor of Christian ministry, Duke University
