Need a Story?

Celebrating Our Bodies

BookIn the summer season of swimsuits and strappy sandals, it can be easy for women to focus an awful lot on the FORM of their bodies rather than their FUNCTION. Instead of bemoaning our flaws, perhaps it’s time to reconsider why God gave us bodies in the first place. In Unsqueezed, Margot Starbuck honestly deals with the tendency to treat our bodies as “ornamental rather than instrumental” and reveals how we can move from a dangerous preoccupation with ourselves towards life-giving relationships with God and others.

Why We Love Pixar

BookBy now you’ve probably seen Toy Story 3, Pixar’s final installment of the Toy Story series. And while it’s clear that Pixar films are pretty great, have you ever stopped to think about why? Beyond the technical brilliance and mind-boggling attention to detail, are there other reasons we love Pixar?

Robert Velarde has spent a lot of time thinking about the Pixar oeuvre and offers valuable insights about the virtues embodied in the films in his latest book The Wisdom of Pixar. Themes such as friendship, identity, family, courage and adventure , not to mention technology, ambition and love, all spring up with surprising consistency, and Velarde can walk you through each of these themes with insight and illustrations.

Strong Faith for Sustainable Activism

BookThe last thing the world needs is more burn-outs. Unfortunately, too often Christians jump into social justice projects with new-found passion only to find themselves disillusioned and worn out by the complex problems before them. What’s needed is a spirituality that can sustain activism, and that’s exactly what Word Made Flesh director Phileena Heuertz offers in her new book Pilgrimage of a Soul.

Phileena is no stranger to need and the importance of deep-rooted faith. Word Made Flesh is a mission organization that sends missionaries to work with some of the most vulnerable people in the world, and Phileena founded WMF’s Community Care Center to ensure that missionaries were receiving the support they needed. In order to renew herself, Phileena and her husband Chris took a six month sabbatical. Chronicling this time, Phileena traces out seven movements within the spiritual journey and explores how each one is necessary to grow closer to God and therefore more empowered to do God’s work in the world.

See why Christine Sine thinks this book is “perfect for summer reading.”
