We’d like to encourage authors to use limited content from their book(s) for the purpose of either promoting their book and/or supporting their own work and ministry. Authors may use content from their own book(s) without seeking prior written permission with the following guidelines:

  • Permission is granted for the use of up to two chapters or 20% of the book (whichever is less).
  • Permission is limited to non-commercial use where the content is offered free of charge.
  • For online use, please include a link to a page selling the book
  • Please include the following credit line (using information included on the copyright page):
Taken from TITLE by AUTHOR. ©YEAR by COPYRIGHT HOLDER. Used by permission of InterVarsity Press. www.ivpress.com.

Please note that contributors (those who have an essay or article published as part of a larger work) are in a slightly different category than authors. We ask that contributors not reproduce their essay until at least two years after the release of the IVP collection containing their essay. After two years, please contact IVP’s permissions department prior to re-using more than 20% of your essay or for any commercial use.

Please contact us at [email protected] for all other uses including, but not limited to, any type of commercial use or the use of more than two chapters (or 20%).

Images and Graphics

The use of images and graphics are often an important part of promoting a book. However, just like text, there are certain measures that need to be taken to honor the copyright of designers and artists. If there are book images or design elements from a book you want to use, please follow these guidelines:

Cover Art and Design Elements:

You are welcome to use an image of the entire front cover of your book as a whole (such as a thumbnail image on a website). Our license agreements for individual graphics and design elements are limited to specific uses and IVP is unable to transfer that permission to authors. If you would like to use an individual graphic element from a cover, you will need to obtain a license from the copyright holder. Contact [email protected] if you need assistance finding the copyright information for an image.

Interior Graphics:

  1. If an image or graphic was used by permission of someone else (i.e., the graphic wasn’t created by you or IVP), then IVP is unable to provide that graphic. The licenses we obtain for graphics and images are limited to specific uses by IVP. If you want to use it, you’ll need to obtain permission from the copyright holder and not from IVP. Copyright information for interior images is typically indicated beneath the image, in a footnote or endnote, or in an appendix.
  2. If an image or graphic was created and owned by you or IVP (or if you don’t know who owns it), then please contact [email protected] and our team will review your request.

Please note that we don’t automatically offer to share our design files or copies of graphics/images. Where appropriate and on request, our permissions team can provide a screenshot or snippet with the requested image(s). High-res graphics may be provided in some situations at the sole discretion of IVP.

Our intent with these guidelines is to reduce IVP’s risk of infringing the copyright of artists and designers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ellen Hsu ([email protected]) or our permissions team ([email protected]).
