Scripture Quotes and Abbreviations

When you quote from Scripture in your manuscript, please choose one primary Bible translation for your quotes and indicate which it is on your title page or in your cover letter. Of course, you may wish to quote from different translations from time to time; just make sure you indicate which it is—for example:

God, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
and makes me tread upon the heights. (Hab 3:19 nrsv)

Our preferred translations are the niv, the nrsv and the rsv. Biblical scholars, of course, may wish to supply their own translations; if you are doing so, please let your editor know. The nrsv is recommended for texts and scholarly books, while the niv is standard for Bible study guides. When quoting or referring to a specific passage, abbreviate the book of the Bible in the style shown above, using no period.
