2 Kings 2: Transition

For more context before you begin studying, read this introduction to the book of 2 Kings.

When our oldest daughter, Sheri, left for college, it was a big transition for our family. She played all four stringed instruments—and several instruments of other varieties. Her part-time job during high school was to teach younger music students. At the same time our next-oldest daughter, Lori, a cellist and a flutist, was being asked to consider picking up some of Sheri's students. It was a scary thought, walking in the footsteps of a respected older sister. Sure, Lori had studied hard and practiced a lot. But she was younger and inexperienced. The mantle was on the ground. Would she pick it up? Elisha had to make the same decision.

Warming Up to God

In what area of your life are you anxious about taking on a responsibility that you think has been given to you?

Read 2 Kings 2

Discovering the Word

  • Why do you think Elijah kept telling Elisha to "stay here" (vv. 2, 4, 6)?
  • Why do you think Elisha insisted on following Elijah?
  • How did Elijah show that the gift Elisha requested was not within his authority to give (vv. 9-12)?
  • Three miracles occur (vv. 14, 19-22, 23-25). What effect would each have on Elisha's ministry?
  • In what ways did God provide support for Elisha in the job he had given him to do? (Use the whole chapter.)

Applying the Word

  • Think of at least one job that you are reasonably sure God has assigned to you. What help has God given you so far in doing that job?
  • What obstacles and discouragements are you likely to face in this job?
  • How might your past experiences of God's support help you through future obstacles?

Responding in Prayer

Ask God to encourage you through the time of transition that you face.
