Conversations: What Does God Sound Like?
Rich: How can I be convinced I have heard the voice of God, so I can know his will for my life?
Ruth: I have written a book on this very topic called God Talk. I’ve read all kinds of books and articles and websites, but I still don’t know the answer. And the Bible doesn’t give us a formula on how to recognize the voice of God.
But there are some biblical principles. One that I would mention for you—as a start—is that if the voice you think you hear says something like you might say, it’s probably not the voice of God. I don’t think God speaks to us to confirm our decision to buy an SUV or to give us help in the exam we did not study for. Some of God’s words in the Bible are shocking. They stunned the hearers, and often they were the last kind of words the hearer wanted to hear—like Abraham being told to sacrifice his son Isaac.
I encourage people not to listen for special messages from God. We have God’s voice in the Bible, and there are all kinds of messages there that we ignore—that we should be listening to.
I hope this is helpful.
