InterVarsity Press to Release N.T. Wright's Evil and the Justice of God
For Immediate Release (February 2006)
InterVarsity Press has announced its acquisition of the North American rights to Evil and the Justice of God by renowned Bible scholar N.T. Wright. First released by UK publisher SPCK in March 2006, InterVarsity Press will release Evil and the Justice of God in the United States in September 2006.
Wright, one of the world's leading scholars on the New Testament, will explore in this book the dynamics of evil, contemporary and biblical understandings of evil, and the ways in which evil presents itself in society today. "I shall argue that our politicians and the media have tried to live as though it weren't much of a problem at all, and that they are having to wake up to the fact that Evil is still a four-letter word," Wright explains in the introduction.
Wright will propose ways to speak about the problem of evil in a postmodern age, and will address what Christians are supposed to be doing about evil. He'll use the last several chapters of the book to address urgent questions, "where the problem of evil, if not articulated and addressed, will cause terrible difficulties and dangers, namely the questions of global empire, of criminal justice and punishment, and of war."
Andy Le Peau, editorial director of InterVarsity Press, says, "Tom Wright is the most significant scholarly and pastoral voice being heard from Britain today. In Evil and the Justice of God he has poured his considerable gifts into a topic that is more pressing with each earthquake and war."
Wright is Bishop of Durham and was formerly Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey and dean of Lichfield Cathedral. He taught New Testament studies for twenty years at Cambridge, McGill and Oxford Universities. Wright's first book with InterVarsity Press, The Challenge of Jesus, was published in 1999. Among his other published works are Jesus and the Victory of God and The Resurrection of the Son of God. He is also coauthor with Marcus Borg of The Meaning of Jesus: Two Visions (1998).
