The Unlikely Story
of How God Called a
Regular Guy to Pastor
an Urban Church

Skater Punks
and Call Themselves
Scum of the Earth.
"The most challenging part about pastoring Scum of the Earth Church," says pastor Mike Sares, "is not giving in to the desire for safety, for normalcy, to rest after these last ten years. It's daunting to give my time and my affection to yet more people who might break my heart. I can warn them not to make the wrong choices before them, but am I willing to help them pick up the pieces after those same wrong choices have shattered their lives? The coolest part is seeing them take those first faltering steps at following Jesus . . . and to see them running down the road after him."
Find out more about Mike's fantastic journey to becoming pastor of this vibrant church full of artists and skater-punks in his new book, Pure Scum.

Meet Likewise Author, Mike Sares
When the band Five Iron Frenzy started a Bible study, little did they know it would morph into a unique church led by pastor Mike Sares.
Before he was hoodwinked by the Holy Spirit into working at Scum, Sares served in many roles, including young adult and singles pastor, advertising account executive, salesman, steelworker and high school English teacher. He's been pursuing an M.Div. from Denver Seminary for over a decade now.
Sares brings his eclectic experience to bear as the senior pastor of an eclectic congregation of artists, punks, skaters, ravers, homeless people and other outcasts at Scum of the Earth Church in Denver, Colorado.
People Really, Really Like This Book
"My friend Mike Sares boldly colors outside the lines of creativity, innovation and necessity, challenging all of us to reconsider what the church looks like and what it's meant to be. After all, what other church in America dubs their smokers the greeting team? Pure Scum is a story of radical grace—one we all need to experience and embrace."
—Margaret Feinberg, author of The Organic God and Scouting the Divine
"Mike Sares is a hero to me as I have watched his missional heart over many years and his dedication to Jesus and the gospel. Reading the pages of Pure Scum is like reading a continuing chapter in the book of Acts. It is an adventurous, risk-taking, inspiring, unusual, mission-focused story about people who are passionate about those who are often missed by the average church. You will be encouraged and thrilled through these pages and your heart will grow in love for those whom Jesus loves."
—Dan Kimball, author of They Like Jesus but Not the Church
"Sares tells the unlikely story, of an unlikely pastor, leading an unlikely church, with an unlikely name. But the evidence of God's grace fills every chapter, and it is sure to inspire many who long to see Christ in the unlikely corners of our world."
—Skye Jethani, managing editor, Leadership Journal, and author of The Divine Commodity: Discovering a Faith Beyond Consumer Christianity
