On Jesus

This volume in the Wadsworth Philosophers Series (Wadsworth, 2003) introduces Jesus as a genuine philosopher with a well-developed worldview. It defends the claim that Jesus is a philosopher, looks at his argument forms, his worldview, and his claims about himself. It further relates Jesus thought to issues in contemporary philosophy and ethics. This readable but thoughtful book is ideal for philosophy or theology courses, as well as for the inquiring unbeliever or aspiring believer who is interested in understanding a side of Jesus not usually considered.

Dictionary of Contemporary Religion in the Western World

This dictionary (InterVarsity Press, 2002) provides unique and valuable access to a burgeoning world of religions, spiritualities and religious movements. It offers an overview of the contemporary blooms of perennial species--Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity--but not to the neglect of Confucianism, Jainism, Shintoism, Taoism, Tantrism and Zoroastrianism. Even the cultural influence and interaction of religion is mapped in a minilibrary of articles on "Religion and . . ."--the arts, the environment, education, globalization, human rights, media, philosophy, politics, psychology, science, sexuality and so forth. A panoply of new religious movements is unfurled in articles ordering them under their mother religions or native soils. And the hybrid buds of new age spiritualities and therapies, psychedelic spirituality and parapsychology, neopaganism, and UFOism, as well as other contemporary and postmodern religious impulses are carefully probed.

Among one-volume reference books on religion, this dictionary distinguishes itself by its profile. It will be a sought-after resource for ministers and religious leaders, teachers and students, educational and church libraries, and anyone seriously engaged in the changing interface between religion and culture.

Jesus in an Age of Controversy

Who is Jesus? Best-selling books challenge us to rethink what we thought we knew. The "Jesus Seminar" makes headlines with its systematic attempts to undermine the accuracy of the Gospel accounts. New Age teachings about Jesus have found their way into many pulpits.

In response to this confusion, Jesus in an Age of Controversy (Harvest House, 1996; Wipf & Stock, 2002) provides a straightforward, easy to understand study of the questionable foundations and faulty conclusions of these new views. This important book provides the historical and logical evidence that confirms biblical teachings about Jesus. It will enable you to defend your faith against attack, help those struggling with questions and doubts, and encourage you with the overwhelming weight of evidence that confirms that Jesus is the only Savior and Lord.

Deceived by the Light

Exploring a variety of testimonies about near-death experiences, most notably that of Betty Eadie in her book Embraced by the Light, this book (Harvest House, 1995; Wipf & Stock, 2002) affirms that the Bible alone reveals all we need to know about life, death, and eternity. It lays out the clear--and sometimes surprising--teaching of Scripture, and it straightforwardly addresses the fears and questions many people have about death and what comes after.

Unmasking the New Age

During the 1980s, the New Age has shifted out of the counterculture into the mainstream of society. Today its effects are felt in almost every aspect of life--medicine, politics, science, psychology and even religion. This book (InterVarsity Press, 1986) describes how the New Age combines Eastern mysticism with Western optimism and explains why it has become so popular. A thorough, biblical analysis also helps Christians know how to respond to this aggressive movement.
