Zephaniah 2: Judgment to Come

OUR NEEDS AND problems often keep us focused on ourselves. Sure we're going to heaven someday. But what about the people we know who do not have this assurance? Just as God fulfilled Zephaniah's warning to the nations around Judah, he will judge sinners as he declared in other portions of the Bible.

Warming Up to God

How often do you think about the judgment your unsaved friends and relatives will endure? Ask God to show you the seriousness of the judgment to come as you study this passage.

Discovering the Word

  • What did Zephaniah tell the people to do in order to avoid God's anger (vv. 1-3)?
  • What would God do to those who punished his people (vv. 4-15)?
  • What sins had the nations around Judah committed (vv. 4-15)?
  • What hope did Zephaniah offer God's people in the midst of this judgment (vv. 6-7)?
  • According to this chapter, what would the nations learn about God?

Applying the Word

  • In what ways is your nation in danger of God's judgment?
  • Reread verse 3. How can you seek the Lord today?

Responding in Prayer

Ask God for opportunities this week to tell others about him.
