Psalm 46 : Still Point in a Turning World

MARTIN LUTHER'S FAMOUS hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is based on Psalm 46. This psalm celebrates Jerusalem as the city of God, the sure foundation for the kingdom of God. Today we can find spiritual strength and security in this psalm, especially when everything else is so topsy-turvy.

Warming Up to God

Consider the times of loss, tragedy or high anxiety when you thought your world was falling apart. How were you able to find the strength to face the dawn of another day?

Discovering the Word

  • This psalm readily falls into three stanzas (vv. 1-3, 4-6, and 8-10) plus two refrains, or chorus lines (vv. 7, 11). What themes emerge in each section?
  • What images of a world falling apart do you see in these verses?
  • What truth about God is conveyed here in contrast to the world?
  • What effect does God's triumph over the nations have on the people who draw their strength from him (vv. 8-10)?
  • Where does one find stillness and security in the midst of violent forces unleashed all around (vv. 10-11)?

Applying the Word

  • What in your life is threatening or pounding away at your sense of security in God?
  • How can you remain still (v. 10) and know God's fortresslike strength (vv. 7, 11) in the midst of a world falling apart?

Responding in Prayer

As God has triumphed, and will triumph, over all that wars against the city of Jerusalem and the soul of the believer, how can you exalt him among the nations? Spend some time being still and centering on him.
