Psalm 18:25-50: A Prayer for Equipping

WRESTLERS, BOXERS AND fencers know that for every move there is an equal and opposite move meant to block it, counterpunch, or parry the thrust. So also God provides just the right protection and timely provision for his people. Here God enables David to alternately evade and thwart his enemies, particularly Saul, eventually overcoming and crushing them.

Warming Up to God

God is our fight coach too. The Lord does not guide where he does not also provide. Think about what battles God may be leading you into and what you need to emerge victorious. Thank God that he will make every provision to help you overcome enemies and obstacles along the way.

Discovering the Word

  • Previously, the psalmist noted that the earth trembled and quaked as an expression of God's anger (v. 7). Now it's the enemies of God's people who tremble or quake in their boots (v. 45). What has God done on David's behalf to bring this about?
  • What was David's part in securing this victory in cooperation with God (vv. 25-29)?
  • In what ways did God the Warrior specifically equip or provide for the warrior David (vv. 30-36)?
  • What reversal of fortune do David and the surrounding nations experience as a result of the Lord coming to his rescue (vv. 37-45)?
  • How does the conclusion of this psalm (vv. 46-50) compare with its beginning (vv. 1-6)?
  • What does that tell you about God the Warrior?

Applying the Word

  • At what points (feelings, circumstances, outcomes) can you identify with David?
  • Think about the fights God may be preparing you for. What equipping do you need? (Where can God strengthen a particular weakness of yours? What can you praise him for already?)

Responding in Prayer

Trust God to fight evil and avenge any wrongs done to you. If you have experienced God's justice in the face of evil, praise him. Recount the ways he has led you and equipped you every step of the way.
