Obadiah 1-21: Compassion for the Fallen
"SHOULD YOU BUY a house that's been repossessed, no matter how cheaply it's offered, or would that be profiting from someone else's misfortune?" To me, the questioner had an overly scrupulous conscience; but perhaps it's good that someone would bother to ask the question. Most of us take advantage of any opportunity that comes along, without caring where it came from.

Discovering the Word
- Edom (the descendants of Esau) had taken advantage of the fall of Jerusalem and even participated in its destruction. How did God respond to their actions?
- What was Edom's attitude toward the future (vv. 3-4)?
- Why would Edom be destroyed (vv. 10-14)?
- How would justice be carried out in their downfall (vv. 15-18)?
- What would be the fate of Edom's lands (vv. 19-21)?
Applying the Word
- What warning do you see in Edom's example about how we should not respond to other people's misfortunes?
- When have you been tempted to gloat over someone's downfall?
- How can you show sympathy and compassion toward someone who has fallen?
Responding in Prayer
Confess any feeling of superiority over those who have fallen. Ask the Lord to help you see others through his eyes of compassion.
