Numbers 32: United We Stand

NEARLY FORTY YEARS together in the wilderness—and now the great moment has arrived. It's time for the Israelites to cross the Jordan, face the opposition, and claim their land. But two tribes announce their intention not to make the trip. Are they exercising their prerogative? Or are the destinies of the twelve tribes intertwined? To what extent must we consider the effect on others when making a decision?

Warming Up to God

Finish this sentence: Others depend on me for. . . . What would happen if you were to abandon a large responsibility at home, work or school? Who would suffer? Ask God to make you aware of your important leadership roles.

Discovering the Word

  • How would you evaluate the two tribes' justification for not crossing the river into Canaan (vv. 1-5)?
  • What important principles does Moses remind them of (vv. 6-15)?
  • What practical considerations might have concerned Moses about the division in destinations?
  • How would you evaluate the compromise offered by the two tribes (vv. 16-19)?
  • Why was this arrangement satisfactory to Moses (vv. 20-24)?

Applying the Word

  • What real or potential divisions can you detect in your church or Christian group?
  • Like Moses, how can you guard unity among believers?

Responding in Prayer

Reflect on the importance of keeping everyone together as we follow God's leadership. Ask God to show you ways you can promote unity in your fellowship and enhance a sense of common goals.
