Leviticus 10: Where Flippancy Doesn't Fit

"THE PRESIDENT IS on the phone!" "It's the Queen calling—she wants to talk to you!" Most of us would gulp and take the phone with a shaking hand. We're far less nervous about approaching the Lord. Certainly we do have confident access to God through Christ. Still it's all too easy to forget that God is holy and only through his mercy can we approach at all.

Warming Up to God

Think about your focus when you enter a worship service. Are you preoccupied with responsibilities and other plans, or are you aware of the wonder of worshiping a holy God?

Read Leviticus 10. »

Discovering the Word

  • What led to Nadab and Abihu's tragedy (vv. 1-2)?
  • What reason did Moses offer for God's extreme reaction (vv. 2-3)?
  • How were Aaron and his two surviving sons to mourn differently from the rest of the people (vv. 6-7)?
  • How else was God's holiness to be esteemed by the priests (vv. 8-11)?
  • Notice the detailed instructions Moses gives regarding the remains of offerings (vv. 12-20). How do his admonitions reflect his concern for the holiness of God?

Applying the Word

  • During worship, what typically distracts you from the sense of God's holy presence?
  • In what ways have you approached God with presumption?

Responding in Prayer

We don't have to attend a worship service to approach the Lord. Acknowledge God's holy presence with you now, and worship him in your heart.
