Lamentations 4—5: Suffering Is Not Forever

WHEN SOMEONE WE know dies, when a spouse departs, when a dream is snatched away, we go through a grieving process. It isn't pleasant, but it's necessary for our emotional healing. Those are not the only times we need to mourn. Lamentations teaches us that grieving over our sins and confessing them to God is important for our spiritual health. As the author ended this book, he focused on steps beyond the grief.

Warming Up to God

How do you talk to God when you are suffering? Are you open with God? Are you afraid to voice certain questions? Do you tend to blame God? Evaluate yourself before you turn to the Scripture text.

Discovering the Word

  • Contrast the people before and after Jerusalem's fall (4:1-12).
  • In what areas did the fall and captivity affect them (4:1-20)?
  • Why did God allow his people to be overtaken by their enemies (4:13-22)?
  • What did the author confess to God (5:1-18)?
  • How does the tone change at the end of this book (5:19-22)? Why?

Applying the Word

  • What part does prayer play in mourning the consequences of your sin?
  • How can talking to God be a help in the midst of suffering?
  • What do you need to confess to God today?

Responding in Prayer

Confess whatever sins God brought to mind. Then focus on the miracle of grace that he offers, letting that be the source of your praise.
