Jeremiah 32:1-25: The Promise of Renewed Land

SOCIOLOGISTS HAVE DISCOVERED a set of behaviors which they call "deferred gratification pattern." It describes the practice of putting off a purchase or action in hope that better dividends would come in the future. Most everyone who lives by deferred gratification expects to get a good return. But what if the benefits don't come in your lifetime? In this chapter Jeremiah makes a real-estate deal that on the surface looks foolish. It is the ultimate in deferred gratification. In the transaction he demonstrates the depth of his character and the quality of his obedience to God.

Warming Up to God

How do you feel when you have to put off buying something that you really want immediately?

Discovering the Word

  • Jerusalem is in a state of siege. How might Jeremiah's willingness to purchase a field have been a means of comfort to the threatened citizens?
  • Why is Jeremiah imprisoned in the courtyard and why is Zedekiah shut up in Jerusalem?
  • Jeremiah records in detail the process of the legal transaction for the purchase of the land (vv. 9-12). What impact would this have on those who watched?
  • Why would Jeremiah make a transaction from which he would never personally benefit (vv. 14-15)?
  • After the purchase Jeremiah offered a prayer (vv. 17-25). What themes are woven throughout the prayer?
  • What further comfort and confirmation of Jeremiah does God offer in verses 38-44?

Applying the Word

  • What can we learn about Christian service and character from Jeremiah's model?
  • Jeremiah's prayer shows a familiar knowledge of God's past actions. How can this study of Jeremiah be a resource for your prayers?

Responding in Prayer

Prayer is a great source of comfort in times of trouble. Talk to God about the things that are on your mind today.
