Ecclesiastes 9:13—10:20: How Do We Live Sensibly?

COMMON SENSE. HAVE you felt that somehow you missed out on this body of wisdom that is supposedly so universal? Of course, we all lack commonsense judgment at times. But in this section, the Teacher addresses something deeper and darker, a lack of commonsense lifestyle. Such a lifestyle, called foolishness, results when human weakness and wickedness asserts control. In this study, he will identify foolish behavior and tell us how to avoid it.

Warming Up to God

  • List the common situations described in 10:8-11 that call for the exercise of good judgment.
  • What are the consequences of wise and foolish lifestyles according to 10:16-20?

Applying the Word

  • In reference to 9:17-18, do you find yourself giving more respect to those who have wisdom or to those who have status? Why?
  • What is an area of life in which you struggle to exercise good judgment? Explain.
  • James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously." What current decision requires a wise attitude or action on your part?

Responding in Prayer

Ask the Lord to teach you prayerful wisdom and to protect you from any inclination toward foolish actions. Ask for his wisdom in current decisions you must make. Ask him to nurture qualities of wisdom in your character.
