2 Samuel 18:19—19:10: Receiving Counsel
I HATE LOOKING silly—looking as if I don't know what I am doing. Sometimes this fear keeps me from the simplest of tasks (asking directions, for instance). This aversion was so strong in my youth that it kept me from trying the things I enjoy so much today, like basketball and golf. I was so paralyzed by fear that I even refused instruction.
Maturity and a growing security in God's love for me have freed me from so many fears—but some still linger. Like I said, I'm occasionally stereotypically male in my reluctance to ask for directions. But experience has taught me that I'll be much better off if I seek other people's advice. I may not always look like the competent man I think people expect me to be, but I'm learning, growing and becoming more like God in humility.
