2 Samuel 9: Integrity

I WAS IN a minor accident not long ago. It caused so little damage that the owner of the other car suggested we settle privately, without the help of our insurance companies and the police. This was an attractive offer, since the accident was my fault and I'd probably get a ticket. But I wanted to do the right thing . . . and besides, someone had already called the police. That week I felt good about having done the right thing. However, the next week when I paid my ticket and my insurance premium went up, I felt frustrated. I caught myself wishing I had taken the man's suggestion. I learned through this incident that, though I value being a man of integrity, I'm not so wild about the costs that sometimes go along with it.

Discovering the Word

  • What is Mephibosheth's relationship to Jonathan and to Saul?
  • In 1 Samuel 20:12-17 David made a covenant with Jonathan. In what way is David's care for Mephibosheth a fulfillment of his promise to Jonathan?
  • What kindness does David show Mephibosheth, and what does it cost him (vv. 7-15)?
  • What does this tell us about David's character?
  • What does this say about David's attitude toward his promises?

Applying the Word

  • In what situations are you most tempted to compromise your integrity? Why?
  • What are some of the real and potential costs you may incur to maintain your integrity?
  • How can you emulate David's integrity in day-to-day situations?

Responding in Prayer
