1 Peter 3:8-22: If I'm Living Right, Then Why Do I Hurt So Much?
WE OFTEN ASSUME a direct connection between "right living" and "easy living." It's an added pat on the back when life runs smoothly. But it is an unspoken accusation when trauma strikes. Peter contemplated this connection—even added a link or two to the chain. (Sure there are ways to live that will decrease our chances for unjust conflict.) But Peter made no promises of easy living. Sometimes suffering comes—whether or not we earn it. It came to Jesus.

Discovering the Word
- Find as many phrases as you can that describe what a Christian ought to be and do in verses 8-12.
- What do you find difficult about the way of life described in verses 8-12?
- In spite of godly living, Peter knew that Christians may encounter hardship. What counsel does Peter offer for coping with suffering (vv. 13-17)?
- Why might unbelievers be willing to listen to reasons for hope from a person who is living the way Peter describes (vv. 15-17)?
- Verse 18 is a "capsule" description of Christ's work and purpose. What all can you know from this verse about why Jesus came and what he accomplished?
Applying the Word
- How could setting apart Christ as Lord, as verse 15 commands, help you endure suffering?
- Our world is often unjust. Bring to mind some of your past or current sufferings. In the context of these sufferings, how can the picture of Christ portrayed by this passage bring you hope?
Responding in Prayer
Thank God for the hope we have been given in Christ.
