1 Chronicles 17: Honored by God's Promises
A MAGAZINE AD campaign has for its theme "a promise." The picture always shows people who are committed to each other, and the words give lavish promises of security. I find the ads unclear, but apparently this insurance company will help the people in the ad keep their promises. Sometimes we extract promises from people against their will. In today's Scripture God gave David an unexpected promise.
Warming Up to God
Think about a time the Lord kept a promise to you. How did it deepen your relationship with him?

Discovering the Word
- The ark of the covenant had been brought to Jerusalem and set up in the tabernacle (tent). What did David plan to do next (v. 1)?
- How did God use Nathan to intervene in David's plans (vv. 2-6)?
- What did the Lord promise David (vv. 7-14)?
- David could have gotten huffy about the Lord not lettinghim build a temple. Instead, how did he respond to the revelation of this unexpected promise (vv. 16-19)?
- How did David express his confidence in God's promise (vv. 20-27)?
Applying the Word
- How do you feel about the promises God makes to us?
- In times of anxiety, what promises of God do you hold on to?
Responding in Prayer
Thank the Lord for his promises. Think of specific ones and how they apply to you, and praise him for his faithfulness.
