ACCS Translations Project
n
addition to the publication of the current English
edition, we have set our sights upon a new goal of
publishing the ACCS in five other languages: Arabic,
Chinese, Italian, Russian and Spanish. The
vision behind this goal is to put the scriptural
insights of the ancient Christian exegetes into the
hands of pastors, teachers, and lay people all over the
world. In doing so, we will be making these ancient
texts available--in some cases, for the very first
time--to a significant portion of the world's
population. The administrative challenges of the
translations project have been assumed by the full-time operations
manager of the project, Professor Joel Elowsky, Drew University. Any
questions you have may be referred to him at jelowsky@drew.edu.

The Translation Process
As far as the actual process of translation is concerned,
we face a twofold task. While the introductions and
editorial notes composed by our twenty-eight English
volume editors will be translated from English, the
ancient texts will be translated from their original
languages. In cases where the original patristic
texts have remained untranslated or inadequately
translated into any of these languages, new translations
will be provided. Wherever current translations are
already well-rendered, they will be utilized. As a
result, fresh translations will be provided for much
neglected texts that have long been regarded as
authoritative models of biblical interpretation.
An International and Ecumenical Undertaking
As you might guess, it will not be easy to locate
translators who have the facility to translate patristic
Latin and Greek into these languages. Many of those
translators that are qualified are either Roman Catholic
or Eastern Orthodox and will need to be contacted
through their respective institutions. As a result, the
ACCS Translations Project is rapidly--and out of
necessity--developing into an international and
ecumenical undertaking. It is our hope that the
collaboration of Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox
Christians in this undertaking will contribute to the
unity of all Christian traditions everywhere.
